Conceived by Eno as 'visual music', 77 Million Paintings is a constantly evolving sound and image-scape that is unique in every moment. Born from his continuous exploration into light as an artist's medium and the aesthetic possibilities of new technology.
Eno first created 77 Million Paintings to bring into the domestic environment artworks that previously only been able to show in large public spaces. Realising the potential in the development of flat screen TVs that often sit darkened and under-used he developed generative software that would configure non-repeatable combinations of his artworks in conjunction with non-repeatable combinations of layered music. Every manifestation of sound and image in each moment is unique to every viewer, (including the artist himself) forever. Paradoxically as the immersive artwork is continually unfolding it draws us beyond each moment to contemplation of the long-term.
